Word Work Packet due Friday (3 parts spelling x 1 part vocabulary).

If not completed in class, students have the option of finishing this packet at home for homework.

Spelling:

  1. Trace spelling sentences in cursive (worksheet provided by Mrs. Bennett)
  2. Rewrite spelling sentences in cursive on notebook paper
  3. Spelling words in PRINT 3x each

Vocabulary:

  1. Five completed word-work dictionary pages for each of this week’s vocabulary words. Dictionary pages can be done on notebook paper and easily fit more than one entry on a page.

On Spelling, and Vocabulary

Seventh grade students, like most grades, are immersed in vocabulary.  Spelling is often taught with vocabulary using Latin and Greek roots to define words.  While this will continue, there are many words that students are familiar with but do not know how to spell.

Our spelling lists are introduced at the beginning of the week in an ungraded  pretest.  These are words 7th graders need to know how to spell.  Words such as favorite or official are easy for them to define but in many cases, they cannot spell.  Once students identify words they have difficulties with, they should concentrate on studying the correct spelling for their quiz on Friday.

Kill Two Birds With One Stone Using Cursive

Like telling time, many students don’t understand cursive writing.  They can’t read or write in cursive.  In an effort to improve their spelling, they’ll practice writing spelling words in cursive in their HW assignments.  However, students will not be tested in cursive - but they will be PRAISED!.  My expectation is that they will improve over time with continued exposure and support.
